Early engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi. Raimondi was born in 1402 near Bologna. He studied with painter and jeweler Francesco Francia. His first dated print is Piramus and Thisbe, c1505. He was in Venice by 1506, and arrived in Rome before 1510. There, he engraved (probably) for Baviera, Raphael's print entrepreneur. He began his shop about 1515 with his wife and students, most notably Marco Dente da Ravenna, Agostino Veneziano and the Maestro del Dado. After the Sack of Rome in 1527, in which he lost everything, it is believed that he moved to Mantua and then Bologna, where he was recorded as dead by 1534. This image Serpent Speaking to a Young Man, is among his earliest engravings, done circa 1505. Measures 10 and three eighths inches by 8 and one half inches.
